m-HPC Broth, Plastic Ampules, 50/pk The Heterotrophic Plate Count (HPC); formerly known as the Standard Plate Count, is a method used to estimate the number of live heterotrophic bacteria in water. HPC testing provides valuable insight into overall water quality and can help support the interpretation of coliform test results, as elevated general bacterial populations may interfere with coliform recovery.

HPC analysis is commonly used to evaluate the effectiveness of water treatment processes for drinking water and swimming pools, as well as to monitor the quality of finished water throughout a distribution system. In chloraminated systems, increasing HPC levels may indicate rising biological activity and the early onset of nitrification, which can increase disinfectant demand.

For smaller water systems or operations with limited resources, HPC testing offers a cost effective troubleshooting tool when other water quality parameters begin to signal potential concerns.
